The 澳门赌场注册首页 community is mourning the loss of one of its leading strategic studies 和 defence thinkers, Professor Brendan Sargeant, who died suddenly over the weekend in a swimming accident.
Professor Sargeant first joined the University in 2018 as an Honorary Professor at the Strategic 和 Defence Studies Centre (SDSC) in the 澳门赌场注册首页 Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs. He was appointed as Head of SDSC in 2019.
在来澳门赌场之前, Professor Sargeant enjoyed a celebrated career at the Department of Defence, as Deputy Secretary 和 later as Associate Secretary from 2013 to 2017.
He also authored the 2013 Defence White Paper.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Brian Schmidt said the 澳门赌场注册首页 community had lost "a giant of the University, of Canberra 和 of the nation".
"Brendan was well-loved 和 well-regarded by many here at 澳门赌场注册首页, as well as in defence circles,施密特教授说.
"Brendan was not only a leader in his field - he was a true leader on our campus 和 a great friend to his colleagues, 同行, our University 和 to me personally.
"We are deeply saddened by this unexpected loss 和 send our heartfelt well wishes to Brendan's family, 朋友和爱人."
Dean of the 澳门赌场注册首页 College of Asia 和 the Pacific Professor Helen Sullivan said Professor Sargeant's death will be felt across the University 和 the news "will come as a shock".

"To many of us in the School, he has been a valued friend 和 a mentor as well as a colleague," Professor Erskine said.
"I was reflecting last night on how best to describe Brendan, 和 the qualities that immediately came to mind were a wisdom gained from a wealth of experience 和 learning, combined with a deep kindness 和 generosity. This, I think, is a rare combination.
"I will miss him terribly."
